Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian podcast.
Happy last day of May! How are we feeling, my friends? Today, on the podcast, we're talking about the reasons why food freedom doesn't work for you.
This is a little bit different because I believe that food freedom CAN happen for everybody. I believe that we were all born intuitive eaters and we can all heal our relationship with food for the better. You can work towards having a better relationship with food and with your body, so that you can truly feel more at peace and live the life that you want. I truly believe that, BUT sometimes food freedom doesn't work.
So, today I want us to talk about the reasons why food freedom may not be working for you, and then we can talk about some things we can do a bit differently so it CAN work for you.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:
- All the thoughts, the beliefs, the emotions that we have around food and our bodies, we are taught
- You can’t have food freedom while you are still restricting
- Internalized fat phobia
- Food Freedom is about trust
- Food Satisfaction
- The tools and guidance needed to achieve food freedom

Nutrition Foundation

Wednesday May 17, 2023
Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian podcast.
I celebrated my birthday last week and I ended up taking the whole week off to celebrate! Growing up in a big household meant our house was always busy, so now that I’m a bit older, my birthday is an opportunity for me to spend the day doing things that I like, things that nurture my soul, and things that are fun and joyful; which meant getting out in nature this year. I get all of my best inspiration when I'm out in nature and connecting with myself, and I came back feeling inspired and excited to talk to you about the idea of having a Nutrition Foundation. It's something that can be a bit misunderstood when it comes to being anti-diet, so we’re diving into it on the podcast this week.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:
- Myths surrounding the anti-diet
- The importance of nutrition in the anti-diet
- The step by step approach to building nutrition foundation
- What is on our plate
- Intuitive Eating

Body Image Work
Wednesday May 10, 2023
Wednesday May 10, 2023
Hey everybody. Welcome back to the Balanced Dietician podcast. I’ve been feeling good the last few weeks! I always kind of forget how my mental health is impacted by winter until we get into spring again. Every spring I just feel like a different person.
It's really interesting because most folks who do the healing journey, to have a better relationship with food and their body, will experience something similar. When you have a not-so-good relationship with food, we kind of know it's not great, but we don't realize how bad it actually is until you've healed. When we can look back and just realize how things used to be, we realize how far we've actually come; pretty cool, right?
For most of us, our relationship with food wasn’t always bad. It started to get tricky we were trying to manipulate food in order to change our body. Body image is often the source of our food relationship issues.
So if we do the work to heal our relationship with food, but we don't do the body image work, it feels kind of like a bandaid solution; we're not doing the deep work that started the problem.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:
- The body positivity movement
- The body image spectrum:
Body respect, Body trust, Body neutrality, Body appreciation, Body confidence, Body acceptance, Body liberation

The Hidden Cost of Diets
Wednesday May 03, 2023
Wednesday May 03, 2023
Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian Podcast; The place where we talk about all things, food, body, mind, and the anti-diet.
When I started to diet, I didn’t know the consequences of dieting. I didn’t know what would happen to my body, and to my mind. I didn’t know, because I was not informed properly. I was told that dieting was gonna make all my dreams come true and that I was gonna feel so good, and that's not actually what happened.
Do you know what actually happens to our bodies when you diet? Why does our body not like dieting? What can actually happen when you diet?
I believe in body autonomy. We can all do what we're meant to do and what feels best for us, but I also believe in informed decisions.
So today, I encourage you to get informed on the hidden costs of diets so that you can make the best decision for you.
In this episode, we discuss:
- The PROBLEM and the SOLUTION that diet culture has created
- Diets were designed as a short term solution
- How diets affect our Hormones
- Other bodily changes brought on by diets
- Weight is the least important part of us BUT it is a part of diet culture you need to know about

Food Psychology: How You Eat vs. What You Eat
Wednesday Apr 26, 2023
Wednesday Apr 26, 2023
Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I’m so happy that you are here with me today.
How are you doing, my friend? How are we feeling today? I was a little under the weather on this week’s podcast but I had to record this episode because it’s an important conversation!
We’ve made it to the end of April and the end of this Canadian winter. It’s starting to actually feel like spring now and slowly moving towards the summertime, which is really exciting. I know that this transition, period can often be difficult when we are healing our relationship with food and our body. There's a little bit more emphasis on bodies over the summertime, so I invite you to take a moment and just check in with yourself about how we're feeling about this new transition into summer. What thoughts do we have around food in our body as summertime is coming along?
Wherever you are in your healing journey, I invite you to check in with yourself on how we are feeling about it and join me today for a a conversation about food psychology.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Nourishing our body to feel good is important but HOW we eat is equally important
- How we feel about our relationship with food
- Feeling disempowered in our relationship with food

Four MUSTS if you want to heal your relationship with food
Wednesday Apr 05, 2023
Wednesday Apr 05, 2023
Welcome to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I am so happy you are here with me this week.
I didn't post a podcast last week because, truly, I didn't want to! I know I know, the algorithm is probably upset with me BUT, I am leaning in to doing things that ONLY feel aligned and last week, it just didn't.
I have come to many realizations in the past few months regarding hustle culture... and honestly, I want to opt out. I am curious, how do you feel about it? Do you see the similarities between diet culture and hustle culture?
This week, I want to talk about the "non-negotiables" if you want a great relationship with food.
If you are feeling that way right now, you’re not alone and this episode is for you.
In this episode, we discuss:
- The resemblance between diet culture and hustle culture
- The 4 steps you CANNOT skip of you want true food freedom

Diet Culture vs. Wellness Culture
Wednesday Mar 22, 2023
Wednesday Mar 22, 2023
Welcome to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I am so happy you are here with me this week.
I am starting to feel a big shift in my energy now that winter is starting to come to a close. Back in November, I shared how much of a negative impact the winter months have on me as I am truly a summer person so the change in temperature is certainly welcome.
I know that this time of year can be challenging for many of us because there’s a lot of pressure to be bikini body ready. We know that in the summertime, it’s very likely that more of our body's going to be exposed which can make us feel very vulnerable and push us to want to diet for the summertime.
If you are feeling that way right now, you’re not alone and this episode is for you.
In this episode, we discuss:
- [02:48] Dealing with diet culture leading up to the summer months
- [06:11] The impact of wellness culture on eating disorders
- [07:30] Wellness culture and diet culture
- [12:05] Sneaky ways wellness culture shows up in everyday life

Welcome to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! Welcome back to the podcast. I am so happy you are here with me this week.
This week we’re running a replay of a solo episode I did a couple of years ago about 6 reasons why food freedom or healing your relationship with food has not worked in the past.
In this episode, we discuss:
[02:15] Reason #1: You are still restricting
[03:21] Reason #2: You are just not eating enough
[04:32] Reason #3: You have not addressed your internalized fat phobia
[06:07] Reason #4: You are still listening to external sources to tell us what we need
[07:50] Reason #5: You are doing mindless eating
[10:33] Reason #6: You try to add more control around food
